The Recyclers Information Center was developed as part of the CloseWEEE (www.closeweee.eu) project aimed at improving technology and procedures for end-of-life treatment of WEEE.

Funded by the European Union

Horizon 2020

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 641747.

Platform Description

The Recyclers Information Center constitutes a centralized source of visually illustrated, multilingual information regarding safe, fast and efficient procedures for treating WEEE, including information on the presence of hazardous substances as well as disassembly procedures, both for generic product categories and specific product models.

This information is converted from a variety of formats into the standardised open source format IEEE 1874, also known as oManual (www.omanual.org).

By providing this information in a centralized manner, the project aims to improve the efficiency of manual disassembly and/or pre-separation both in the case of repair or reuse and recycling. In the first case, this would allow for more cost-effective repair or harvesting of components; in the second case, better pre-processing is expected to lead to higher quality of recycled fractions.

The RIC platform could serve as a means to implement article 15 of the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU, by providing a central platform for sharing information between manufacturers and recyclers or reuse parties in a standardized format.

The development of the platform is an iterative process during which both the content and form are developed in consultation with manufacturers, recyclers and reuse centers in order to ensure that it meets the needs of all parties concerned.

Content for the Recyclers Information Center can be supplied by manufacturers, repair centers, recyclers, or any other party willing to share relevant information and know-how.

We welcome any party that would be willing to share know-how relevant to the treatment of WEEE.

We can assist you in converting existing documents to the oManual format.

The platform can also be used to describe any procedures which any such organization might want to document internally without making them available to other parties. For such applications, private guides can be created.

The Recyclers Information Center is an online platform developed by iFixit GmbH (www.ifixit.com) in collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM (www.izm.fraunhofer.de) and the reuse and recycling center DRZ in Vienna (www.drz-wien.at).
